Our objective and how you are involved...

Blue-earth.org is an eco-accountability initiative with a mission to provide a unified global register of recognized carbon offset activities. Though tremendous progress has been made over the past few years toward offsetting carbon emissions, a unified 'dashboard' to measure progress has yet to be implemented. Various organizations with common yet differing methods and standards have set out to attack the problem of carbon emissions. In 2009 an estimated 30 billion metric tons of carbon emissions were released into the atmosphere. Yet, what is the real picture in terms of how much was actually offset? This is the question we hope to provide an ongoing accurate answer for with a periodic reporting scheme from authorized carbon offset providers. The information is tabulated and presented in simple and easy to read format on this site.

Carbon Emissions

How effective are the offsets?

A report from the US Energy Information Administration highlights that while there were nearly 10 billion metric tons of carbon offsets implemented last year, there were over 30 billion metric tons of carbon emissions. Moreover, the effectiveness of the carbon offsets is subject to inconsistent, and at times subjective reporting.

Carbon Dioxide

Explosive growth in the last one hundred years.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center reports that in the year 1900 there was approximately  3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere. Tody that number has grown a hundred fold to over 300 billion metric tons.

Carbon Dioxide Projections

Continued growth is predicted.

The International Energy Outlook estimates that carbon dioxide emissions will grow to over 40 billion metric tons by the year 2030. This represents an approximate 30% increase in less than 15 years.

How you can make a difference

Without an international standard for measurement, accountability becomes evasive.
“it is a bold and necessary challenge to insure that we are acting responsibly in our activities to assure that future generations are not paying the price for our consumption”
“in an industry dominated by pricing pressure it is easy to forget that the greatest expense may come at a later date for the actions we take, or do not take now.”
“there are no easy answers here, but it behooves us to start measuring the problem, and measuring the progress. When we examine the mega-trends that will be developing over the next fifty years, it is clear that these issues cannot be ignored”
